Customer request
An impressive power plant with an output of over 1000 MWh per year was built for a large ice rink in the municipality of Angers in France; this was needed for both the rink’s cooling system and the ambient heating and lighting system.
Refrion contributed to the plant’s construction by supplying two custom-designed and made pairs of coolers – two Combo and two Superjumbo units – able to meet the technical requirements in terms of performance, sound level and the maximum dimensions envisaged in the tender contract.
Refrion’s solution
Refrion presented a complex project that guaranteed the maximum efficiency of the entire plant. In order to ensure that the surrounding environment was air conditioned, the project envisaged the use of 2 Combo units with a combined power output of 1400 kW. This choice was the best compromise between the Refrion models, as far as the generated power and physical dimensions were concerned.
In order to cool – and keep frozen – the rink’s sheet of ice, we designed 2 special Superjumbo units – with a combined power output of 1600 kW – equipped with oval tube-fitted coils and the Digital Intelliboard system so that the Refrion units could even be remotely-controlled and troubleshooted. The Superjumbo Dry Cooler is equipped with exclusive oval tubes which guarantee ultra-high performance by means of a reduced air flow pressure drop through the heat exchangers, which in turn reduces friction.
This geometry – 31SO – improves performance by up to 15% compared to round tube geometries.
The Superjumbo Dry Coolers are also equipped with a Strain Relief System, the exclusive Refrion system designed to stabilise the machines throughout their service life, and prevent them bending during all lifting, transportation and installation operations.
